Bumpkin Chelsea

Pony

As much as I want to explore more of London my food map is sadly still mainly focused around Soho and eastward with the occasional escapes to Mayfair/Notting Hill/Kensington for something over the top. The thing with London is that you don’t have to leave your area and still have more than enough good options no matter what you want to eat. So when I received an email from Square Meal about a blogger dinner at Bumpkin in Chelsea I got a good excuse to visit a more relaxed restaurant the other side of town.

There are 4 Bumpkins around London: Notthing Hill, Chelsea, South Kensington and Westfield Stratford. The Chelsea branch has an outside dining area which is quite nice when the weather allows. About 10 people were gathered for this event, all new faces, all curious of what the evening might entail. The evening started with Pimm’s cocktails which together with the relaxed surroundings in the garden reinforced the arrival of summer. Judging by the crowd this evening it seems to be a popular place for families living in the area. The food at Bumpkin is centered around British produce presented with classic cooking.

The meal started with three juice samples as seen above to the right: watermelon/cucumber/mint, grape fruit/carrot/ginger and cucmber/apple/lime.

I liked the bite of the grape fruit/carrot/ginger juice though I probably would prefer to start the meal in a more quiet way with the watermelon/cucumber/mint juice.

Pan-seared Scottish King Scallops

I started of with a classic combination of scallops and pea (soup). The plump scallops melted into the light flavours of the pea soup. The bacon added texture and accent to the light sweetness. A great summer dish.

Roast Monkfish, Mussels in Light Curry Cream Sauce

For main I had the monkfish with mussels in a light curry sauce. The fish was well cooked without going over the border to become rubbery which easily happens to monkfish. I found the sweet potato beneath the fish overly salty, unfortunately overpowering the mild curry sauce which was a pity on an otherwise well done plate of food.

Sticky Toffee Pudding with Vanilla Ice Cream

The meal finished with a sweet treat in the shape of a Sticky Toffee Pudding. The Toffee Pudding delivered what I wanted: rich sweetness. Without the ice cream it would have been an overdose of sweetness but it hit the right balance and ended the meal on a high note.

Bumpkin is a cute place in a cute neighbourhood, suitable for families and relaxed gatherings. The meal started well and ended well though with a small dip on the main. Staff was helpful and attentive and of course the good weather helped as well on this semi al fresco dinner.
